Welcome To Elm Class!

This term, we are learning all about Pirates! We started oiur topic with a fantastic day as dressed as Pirates and were welcomed by Captain Maynard. We climbed the rigging and scrubbed the decks, we sang Pirate songs and made treasure maps and finally ate crackers and drank Grog!                                      What a fantastic day we had!

We are a mixed Year 1 and 2 class who love having fun whilst learning about new things. We currently have 14 Year 2s and 7 Year 1s. Our teacher is Mrs Maynard and Mrs Todd is our lovely Teaching Assistant.

We appreciate the time you take to read with your children every day. Thank you for writing a comment to show the reading going on at home. Children will continue to change their books everyday if they have read at home; Mrs Maynard and Mrs Todd will aim to read with your child at least once a week. Where appropriate we will also be sending word cards to practise reading too, similar to the sets of cards you may have experienced in Oak Class.

 Homework and spellings

All children are now bringing spellings home to practise. These sheets can be kept at home. We will be assessing how the children are doing with this by testing them in school on a Monday. The spellings will be a mixture of common words, topic words, words we are learning in phonics and words specifically to be learnt in Year 1 or Year 2. All children will have a homework folder. Year 2s will have homework set every Thursday to be returned by the following Monday. Year 1s will have homework approximately once a month, reinforcing our learning and topic work, which will also come home on a Thursday to be returned by the following Monday.

 PE days

Our PE sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursday although occasionally we do PE at other times too so it is helpful to have the PE Kits kept in school at all times.

We love having extra help in Elm Class, especially with reading and art activities. It is such a great support and the children love it too. If you are available to help on a regular or one off basis, we would love you to come and speak to us. Volunteers who help on a regular basis would need to have a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Scheme) which would be carried out by the school.

We are very happy for parents to come and speak to us about concerns they may have or to pass on important information about their child. We check the reading records regularly so please feel free to communicate with us through this or to speak to us at the beginning or end of the day.

Many thanks for all your support and we look forward to working together with you this term.
